Seven Spirits of God

July 12, 2020

Welcome! This is session eight of a series on some of the basics of congregational living. We live in an age in which I believe we are seeing the Kingdom of God overtaking the church age. The Body of Christ needs to come out of Laodicea and into living the life of love as taught in the Book of Ephesians.

Previous Sessions

  • Session One – The Timeline of Anoka Awakening
  • Session Two – Christ Jesus, The Cornerstone

This is a study that requires some meditation and contemplation.

The Initial Scripture

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

Isaiah 11:2

Questions to Consider

  • Is this seven Spirits, or is it four Spirits?
  • Is this the Holy Spirit?

Other Key Verses

Here are other verses to look at. Emphasis is added to key phrases to take note of for this study.

  • The Seven Spirits
  • The Seven Torches, or Lamps
  • The Seven Eyes, or Eyes of the LORD
  • Before the Throne
  • All the earth; everywhere

John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from Him Who is and Who was and Who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before His throne.

Revelation 1:4

  • “who are before His throne.”: not on the throne, as God is, but before the throne, as an audience in front of the throne
    • Would this be Holy Spirit?
    • Seven, not four
    • “Grace to you and peace” from the seven spirits

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of Him Who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.’”

Revelation 3:1a

  • “Him who has”: possesses, or holds
    • Would this be Holy Spirit?
    • Seven, not four
    • Seven stars: the angels of the seven churches (Revelation 1:20)

From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumbles and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God,

Revelation 4:5

  • “before the throne”: not upon the throne
    • Contrasted with “from the throne”
    • Would this be Holy Spirit?
    • Seven, not four

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

Revelation 5:6

  • On the Lamb: possesses, or holds
    • Would this be Holy Spirit?
    • Seven, not four

For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.

Zechariah 3:9

  • Seven eyes

For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. “These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range through the whole earth.”

Zechariah 4:10

Also, seven lamps in verse 2

  • Seven eyes of the LORD

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward Him.

2 Chronicles 16:9a

  • Eyes of the LORD
  • To give strong support to faithful disciples

For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and He ponders all his paths.

    • His eyes are upon man everywhere, always

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

  • Everywhere, always

  • My Take: I believe the Seven Spirits of God are before the throne of God giving report and receiving instruction. They are sent out to give strong support to faithful disciples who are always and everywhere under the watchful eye of Almighty God, never left alone. They observe and report on the evil and the good.

Colossians 1:19

The Spirit upon Jesus Christ

Here are a few verses concerning Holy Spirit with Jesus. Emphasis is added to key phrases to take note of for this study.

And the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from Heaven, “You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.”

Luke 3:22

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Luke 4:18-19

Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2a

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Until the day when He was taken up, after He had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen.

Acts 1:2

And was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of Holiness by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

Teaching by Ian Clayton

This is from notes I took watching his videos.

  • The seven spirits are to empower us to establish the Kingdom and to express it, as heirs of God, to the world around us, to enable the world to encounter Him.
    • My Notes:
      • Preach the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand
      • Facilitate encounters with God
    • They are sent out and expressed through us, as we go out, carrying their expression to the world as Sons of God.
      • My Notes:
        • Being Disciples
        • Making Disciples
        • Practicing the Presence of God
      • You cannot express something until you’ve experienced it.
        • My Notes:
          • Experience needed in order to share effectively

(End of Ian Clayton material)

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.

2 Corinthians 4:5

  • We don’t proclaim ourselves to be anything but your servants
  • Jesus is Lord

For God, Who said, “Let light shine out of the darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

  • From dark to light
  • The light from God in us
  • Given to us
    • To give to others

    • Colossians 1:27

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

  • Branch of the Vine
    • John 15:5

Colossians 1:27

  • A mystery
  • Christ in the believer
  • The hope of glory
  • 28-29: The Spirit of Wisdom?

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5

  • We need to abide in Christ to have any power or fruitfulness

  • Abide: to endure without yielding; to wait for: await

  • My Take:
