Who God Says He Is

The names of God illustrate something of His character and indicate what He wants to be to His children. It is good to review this list often for a couple of reasons. First, it glorifies God as we meditate on Him with a spirit of thanksgiving, a form of worshiping Him for who He is. Second, it builds our faith as we remember the benefits available to us as we call on His name.

We ought to join King David in daily worshiping God for who He is and praising Him for what He has done, for what He is doing, and for what He has yet to do.

I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt
His name together!

Psalms 34:1-3 ESV

One example might be Isaiah 9:6 which tells us of four names for the Messiah.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 ESV

I make no claims that this is an exhaustive list; thirty-five listed here. Furthermore, the names and meanings of them here are the best I have found in my study of many sources.

Also, there may be more verses in the study than referred to in the podcast. And there are certainly more verses in Scripture than referenced in this study.

  • Abba, Father
    • Isaiah 63:16; Romans 8:15
      • “Father” or “Daddy”
    • Strong’s Hebrew #1, ab
      • father
    • Strong’s Greek #5, Abba
      • Abba, father
      • Also used as a tender endearment of a beloved child – i.e. in an affectionate, dependent relationship with their father; “daddy,” “papa”

For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.

Isaiah 63:16 ESV

God is Father, as in Creator of life and committed to it.

He is also referred to here as our Redeemer. The cost of our redemption was Christ Jesus, the Son, on the cross. He is our Deliverer as He paid our debt, freeing us from the consequence of our sin, the second death.

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

Romans 8:15 ESV

God is Father, the one who adopts us as children and cares for us and desires a loving relationship with us.

  • Adonai
    • Ezekiel 16:8; Habakkuk 3:19
      • “The Lord”
      • “My Lord”
    • Strong’s Hebrew #136, Adonay
      • Lord

God, the Lord, is my strength; He makes my feet like the deer’s; He makes me tread on my high places. To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.

Habakkuk 3:19 ESV

A moment on the word – Lord: a superior as in master, or one who has power and authority over others.

lord – all lower-case letters: when the “l” is lower case, it is referring to man; lord or master, one who has authority over another

as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

1 Peter 3:6 ESV

Lord – upper case “L”, lower case “ord”: when the “L” is upper case, the name is attributed to God, as in our Lord Jesus Christ

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.

Acts 18:25 ESV

LORD – all letters upper-case: the word is “the name of God”, Yahweh

A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Isaiah 40:3 ESV

  • Alpha & Omega
    • Revelation 1:8
      • “Beginning and End”
      • “The First and The Last”
        • Who Is, Who Was, and Who Is to Come, The Almighty
    • Strong’s Greek #1, Alpha
      • Alpha (the first letter of the Greek alphabet)
    • Strong’s Greek #5598, O
      • O (omega, the last letter of the Greek alphabet)
    • Note: beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet
      • alpha + beta = alphabet, the listing of our letters

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Revelation 1:8 ESV

  • Attiq Yom
    • Isaiah 46:9-10; Daniel 7:9,13-14
      • “The Ancient of Days”
    • Strong’s Hebrew #6268, Attiq
      • “aged”, a part of the name of God
    • Strong’s Hebrew #3118, Yom
      • day

In Isaiah 46:10 God states, “declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done” as a reference to being the Ancient One.

“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were
burning fire.”

Daniel 7:9 ESV

  • Baal-Perazim
    • 2 Samuel 5:20; 1 Chronicles 14:11
      • “The God of the Breaking Through”
    • Strong’s Hebrew #1188, Baal Peratsim
      • “possessor of breaches”, a place in Palestine

Baal-perazim is the name of a place, named for the sake of the LORD breaking through David’s enemies, the Philistines, in the Valley of Raphaim, southwest of Jerusalem. (Raphaim: ancient giants)

And David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. And he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me like a breaking flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called
Baal-perazim.

2 Samuel 5:20 ESV

  • Christos
    • 1 John 4:2, and many other verses
      • “The Anointed One”
    • Strong’s Greek #5547, Christos
      • The Anointed One, Messiah, Christ
    • Jesus Christ, or Jesus the Anointed One

Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One, and if we are His we must acknowledge as much. If we cannot acknowledge this, we are not His disciples.

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit
of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

Into Your hand I entrust my spirit; You have redeemed me, Lord, God of truth.

Psalms 31:5 NASB

The idea here is that God is true, faithful and is the God of truth since He does not and cannot lie.

in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began

Titus 1:2 ESV

-AND-

so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

Psalms 119:50 ESV

This would be my comfort; I would even exult in pain unsparing, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

Job 6:10 ESV

Or perhaps it is Strong’s Hebrew #5162, nacham, defined: to be sorry, console oneself. Though this definition doesn’t appear likely, there could be something in the Hebrew language that affects the word, as the word is used frequently throughout Isaiah as a source of comfort from God.

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 66:13 ESV

The bible verse I see most referenced is 2 Corinthians 1:3, however, the word there is Greek, paraklésis (Strong’s Greek #3874). Its definition is: a calling to one’s aid, encouragement, comfort.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

2 Corinthians 1:3 ESV

It is not the meaning of the Greek word that is in question, but the lack of the word “nehkumah”, even though it is repeatedly used in the lists of the names of God. I have yet to come across someone teaching from where the word originates in the bible or Hebrew language. “Nechamah” is the closest I find both in spelling and in definition. While many Scripture passages do speak to the comfort that God provides, there seems to be a mixture within the explanation of this term.

Until such time as I find something more definitive, or if someone provides an explanation to me, I will go with El Nechamah, God My Comfort.

have seen him who looks after me.” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

Exodus 3:14 ESV

The following names of God are Jehovah “Name” and in the translation begins “The LORD” followed by the name. I am substituting “Yahweh” for “The LORD” because when spoken, we tend to think of the Lord Jesus Christ as opposed to Almighty God, the I AM, the fullness of the Godhead. Remember the comparison of “lord,” “Lord,” and “LORD.”

Let’s drop down and look at Yahweh next.

Yahweh – I AM

So we see these names are what God wants to be to His children; I AM and the name of the attribute.

That concludes the list I have assembled at this time. I am sure there are more, and I can add to my list as time goes on. Do you have a list of your own to refer to? Feel free to print this list and add to it as you discover more of the names of God or as you research a certain name more deeply. Read through it regularly, getting it into your spirit, and glorifying God in worshiping Him for who He is.

My Expanded Paraphrase of Numbers 6:24-26

The LORD, the I AM, the one true GOD;

Bless you, setting you apart as holy and consecrating you for holy purposes, declaring you sacred;

Keep you through His guarding you, watching over you, and preserving you;

The LORD, the I AM, the one true GOD;

Make the light of His being, from His face turned toward you, to come upon you and into you;

He being gracious to you, showing you favor;

The LORD, the I AM, the one true GOD;

Lift up His face toward you, seeing you, recognizing you;

Placing upon you His peace and welfare, in completeness and soundness.
